I think what’s more important to consider than what to take special for women, is what to AVOID special for women.
I’m pretty sure all women know to watch for a good Calcium intake etc, but what about the stuff that’s bad for you?
Do you know what BPA is? We all are trying to avoid it (we’ve all seen the BPA-Free labels on bottles and food cans lately) but do you know what it does? How about some of those pesticides and herbicides they use on our non-organic foods?
Do you know what they do? Many of them contain what are called endocrine disrupters. They (duh) disrupt the endocrine system. Which is to say… your hormone signaling pathways. But it doesn’t disrupt all of them. Many are well known as estradiol mimics. They are similar in shape to estradiol (estrogen, lutenizing hormone, progesterone…) and it takes the place of these very important female hormones in the body. This can lead to infertility, increase risk of uterine and breast cancers as well as other unpleasant things.
I try not to get on my soap box about organics because, hey, that’s my thing and I understand not everyone wants to adopt it… but I feel like the general population is under-educated and overly comfortable with not knowing and not caring about the impact.
So… sure, have your yogurt and have your Ca2+ pill in the morning… but keep in mind sometimes keeping out what you don’t need is just as important as taking in what you do need.
Cheers,
~Bonnie

little known fact: taking calcium by itself is not good for bone health. it requires a fat co-factor to be effective. Bone broth is good for this as is full fat dairy.
