So I want to join the military but I’m terrible at push ups. :( I can only do like 1 push up and like 10 “girl” push ups. Do you have any advice on getting more strength in my upper body? And do you think I’d be able to get to 10 in a month? Thanks :)

Okay anon, first things first:

They are modified push ups and anyone can utilize them to improve ability.

In order to get better at the thing you’re bad at… you have to do the thing you’re bad at! Do push ups and modified push ups! Other alternatives to the modified push up is a wall push up or a chair push up. Which is what it sounds like. It will allow you to move your whole body, but at an angle so it’s less weight.

I posted my “chin up” routine last night. This could be utilized with push ups as well. Put on a movie. Set a timer to go off every 10 minutes. Do 10 push ups every time the timer goes off until the movie credits roll. You’ll improve in no time. No. Really. You’ll be a beast in like… a couple of weeks if you do this every night.

And the best part about this method? Since you’re not working “to failure” or “to fatigue” there is less muscle tearing and therefore less soreness. You will not get the size gains like you would with going “to failure” but you’ll get the strength gains, which is what you’re after.

Consistency. Do it every day or every other day. No cheating. Everybody starts somewhere and you need to keep pushing to get anywhere.

Cheers,
~Bonnie
